The four most common types of weight bench is the flat bench, the vertical bench, incline bench, and decline bench.

A narrow, long padded bench is called a flat bench. This bench is mostly used for working the upper body muscles with an exercise called bench presses. A bench that actually looks like a chair with a very straight back is called a vertical bench. This bench has a back support to keep you from hurting the back muscles. Dumbbell shoulder presses are easier to do on this type of bench.

The bench that can easily be adjusted to a sitting position or a flat position is the incline bench. This is quite a versatile piece of equipment and you can do several different work outs on it. Incline presses are a great way to work out with this bench. This bench is great for many different work outs so you are not limited to just one. This bench is preferred by most people because you can do more work outs with this one.

A decline weight bench has a downward slop to it, this makes your feet higher than your head. This bench can be used for strengthening your chest muscles. This is the less common of the four benches. The exercises done on this bench usually call for some awkward positions and if you are not careful you could be injured. The benefits of this bench are great but the it is a little harder to use than the others.

You may decide to visit a gym before you buy your weight bench to try out the many styles of benches. Make sure that you enjoy the bench before you purchase it. Also before choosing a bench you should consider what muscles you need work on. The benches have different uses for different muscles so pick a bench that will target your problem areas.

You may decide that you need a bench that works out more than just your upper body. If this is the case you may want to check out the leg curl bench. This bench is a flat weight bench with a leg curl bar attached to the bottom. While lifting weights you simply do leg curls with the bar to work out the leg muscles.

An abdominal bench is great too if you need work on your abdomen. The abdominal bench is slightly declined for you to do abdominal exercises on it. This bench has rollers for you to put your feet in to keep from sliding off. You could use a regular decline bench for abdominal exercises but you would have to be very careful.

There are certain techniques that you will need to be careful to follow while working on all of these weight benches if you want to avoid getting hurt. These benches can cause you to suffer damage to the muscles, to have a pulled muscles, or you could even damage your spine. If you use the right form while lifting weights you will be able to avoid injury. Be sure to use the right form from the very beginning til the end of the work out.
