Building a pond is one DIY project that is relatively easy and can be done in a reasonable time frame. When building a pond it is important that a person does some research, gets the materials that will be needed ahead of time, and has the right tools and materials to make the project go smoothly.

The first thing that one will need to decide is what purpose their pond will serve. Some people will enjoy a Koi pond. These fish make great additions in a garden pond and provide hours of entertainment. When properly cared for the fish live for several years and grow to a large size.

Even small Koi ponds must be larger than a goldfish, garden, or waterfall pond. If you decide on a Koi pond you will need to plan on a larger pond than you are expecting. Koi eat many of the plants that are in a garden pond so if you are going to put in a garden pond, plan on goldfish as the fish of choice. Some people put in a pond specifically for goldfish.

There are many plans on the Internet and in home improvement stores available for building ponds. There are many different ways to build a pond. Some involve using a prefabricated pond lining and other involve the use of a rubber liner. For details on building a pond, one will want to do some research on the method that will work best within the timeframe one wants to build their pond and use those plans.

Location is very important when planning a pond. One does not want to place their pond in an area where it will get run-off from rain. In some cases it might be necessary to have a barrier around the rim of the pond to keep water out during heavy rain storms. The run-off of rain water contains chemicals from the soil that can harm plants and fish in the pond.

Fish don't mind being in the shade. If a person is building a fish pond that will not contain a lot of plants, then having the pond in the shade for much of the time will work find. However, if the pond is for a garden, the pond will need to be placed in a location that gets sunlight at least five to six hours per day.

Unless you want to spend a majority of your time digging leaves out of your pond, do not put it near trees. Many people make the mistake of putting their garden under a tree so that they can sit in the shade and enjoy their pond. Unless the tree is one that will not drop leaves, this is not wise. Leaves cannot stay in a pond, they must be removed.

When digging your pond hole remember that a small Koi pond will need a minimum of a thousand gallons of water and three feet of water. The hole that is dug will be about 1/4 less than the actual size of the pond so you will want to dig the hold 25% larger than you think you want to get the size that you want.
