If this is your first dinner party it can seem a little overwhelming. Being prepared will take all of the stress out of the planning and allow you to enjoy your guests and the dinner. The best party starts with early planning, avoid waiting until the last minute to decide on food, drinks and decorations.

After deciding how may guests you can choose to have a formal dinner or a casual dinner. If this is your first gather, a small casual dinner is somewhat simpler to prepare. The meal could consist of a large pot of homemade beef stew and a big green salad.

If you would rather have a formal dinner, you should limit the amount of guests you invite to approximately six. A formal meal should consist of an appetizer, salad, a light soup, the entree which could be as simple as lasagna or as formal as steaks, and a dessert.

When sending the invitations you should allow enough time for the RSVP to be answered. You will need to know how many guests are coming in order to purchase the food. When sending formal invitations, let your guests know it will be a dressy event. For a casual theme send an invitation that lets your guests know it will be a casual fun night.

Decorating is one of the fun parts in preparing for a party. For a formal dinner, use your best china and cloth napkins. Scatter small white lights through out plants and dim the lights. Also remember to use a lot of white unscented candles. An informal dinner could have a winter activity theme such as sledding or snowmen. Christmas snow available in the sheets look great when spread out on the table and under the food. Styrofoam balls can be purchased inexpensively and scattered around to look like snowballs. Use white or blue dishes for a warm feeling.

Make sure your dessert has a winter feel to it as well. Serve chocolate cake with candy canes crushed over the top or a mint flavored cake. Have plenty of hot chocolate or flavored coffee as well. For activities at a casual party, gather the snowballs you have scattered around and give them to your guests with some accessories and have everyone make snowmen as a take home gift. For a formal dinner you could have your guests bring a small charitable gift and everyone gathers to wrap their gifts together for donation.

It is hard not to become a little stressed when planning a party, but it is important to remember the best part of any get together is being with friends and family to laugh and catch up on each others lives. Do not forget to have cheerful music in the background. Have fun, laugh and enjoy the company of loved ones.
