Most of the households are left high and dry after exploring their electric bills at the end of the month. The inability of the homeowner to put a hold on the excess usage of electricity drives him crazy. If the measures that you're adapting to check your electricity usage, seem to be going in vain then follow some basic steps to do so.

Move to your kitchen first and open the door of your refrigerator to take a look at the state of the freezer. If the density of the ice is very high then use the defrost button to remove the ice spread. The defrosting of the refrigerator is a healthy practice that can save a lot of energy for your electrical setup. No defrosting means that your refrigerator would use more power than normal and that would subsequently add up to your monthly electric bill.

Arrange the food items in the refrigerator in such a way that a proper ventilation is maintained. Don't render an air-tight arrangement inside the refrigerator and make way for proper spaces in between the different items.

Place your hand on the edges of the refrigerator door to feel any cold air. If you do so then it may point towards a fault in the physical status of the rubber or hinges of the door. Get them examined by an expert and replace if necessary.

Nowadays, the market is flooded with energy-efficient appliances and refrigerators. If you're planning to replace your old refrigerator with a new one then go for the one tagged with EER (Energy Efficient Refrigerator) label. Also, try to purchase the one with multi-doors facility as it consumes lesser energy than the single door refrigerators.

Similarly, the other home appliances such as air-conditioners, televisions, fans, bulbs, water heaters, ovens etc. must be used when they're actually in use. In case of air-conditioners, keep the temperature to a moderate level. This is because AC consumes 5-6 percent more energy with each degree of drop in temperature. Make it habitual to get your AC serviced regularly to prevent it from any irregularity.

The televisions, fans and lights should be switched off when not in use. Any fault in any of these electrical or electronic devices must be corrected with immediate effect. In addition, don't overheat the food while using the microwave ovens. Apply similar principle to the application of the water heaters and water boilers as well.

Keeping a good track of all these appliances and their working would ensure that the electricity usage remains within the controllable limits.
